My Scene: Cape Cod, Massachusetts. New England’s wind, waves and endless coastline. By capt. Jay Horn

With 560 miles of coastline, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, is fast becoming the kiting mecca of the East Coast. Located just one and a half hours from both Boston and Providence, Rhode Island, New England’s famous peninsula provides world-class conditions for everyone from beginners to pros.

The cape’s unique geography and proximity to three major bodies of water — the Atlantic Ocean, Cape Cod Bay and Nantucket Sound — allows for diverse riding styles. There are numerous flat-water spots available year-round and great surf throughout the spring and fall. Plus, unlike most of the East Coast, where frequent high-pressure systems kill the wind, the Cape boasts steady sea breezes all summer.

As one of the few public beaches with a designated kiteboarding area, West Dennis is a popular summer spot. The smooth, flat water inside the beach’s main jetty makes it perfect for all skill sets. The beach has a shallow, sandy bottom. Low tide is optimal for beginners, while high tide attracts the more advanced riders. West Dennis also offers restrooms, a snack bar and waterfront dining at the Lighthouse Inn, where you can watch all of the action.

Just a few miles north is Chapin Memorial Beach. In spring and fall, when north and westerly winds often crank up, Chapin’s conditions are amazing. Sitting on sheltered Cape Cod Bay, the clean, clear waters frequently resemble those you’d find in the Caribbean, and the tidal variations between low and high tide can be nearly a half-mile. At midtide, you’ll find endless shallow pools for flat-water riding, while high tide often pushes in fun waist- to chest-high wind swells. Last year, more than 70 kiters were out over Labor Day weekend, so rest assured Chapin can handle big crowds. After your session, check out Chapin’s Restaurant, which has a killer raw bar and tasty drinks.

On days without wind, Cape Cod holds a variety of other fun activities. A series of scenic biking trails extend 40 miles along the outer Cape, while the National Seashore provides several surfing and stand-up paddleboard options. If you’re into cool wildlife experiences, check out one of the whale-watching tours in Provincetown.
